1. Summary
This product bulletin announces the availability of the DS14mk4 disk
enclosure and ESH4 enclosure module for First Customer Ship. The DS14mk4 and ESH4 are capable of up to
4Gb/s Fibre Channel (FC) speeds for maximum performance and investment
protection. Like its DS14mk2 predecessor, the DS14mk4 offers
a fully redundant design with dual hot-swappable ESH4 enclosure modules, dual
hot-swappable power supply units (AC or DC), dual fan units, Multipath HA
Storage path redundancy, and 14 slots for FC disk drives (10k* or 15k RPM). *The DS14mk4 and
ESH4 will eventually replace the current DS14mk2 and ESH2, which are expected
to reach their End of Availability (EOA) by November 2007. A separate May EOA
bulletin will provide details on the EOA for the DS14mk2 and ESH2 legacy
shelf components. To ensure a smooth product transition for existing customers, the
DS14mk4/ESH4 have backward compatibility to Data ONTAPฎ 6.4.4, the same
minimum release required for DS14mk2/ESH2. As a result, customers only need
to qualify new hardware (and not upgrade Data ONTAP) in order to expand
storage.
Front: 14x FC disk drives Back: 2x ESH4, 2x PSU/fans 2. Whats
New The
DS14mk4 disk enclosure offers the latest 4Gb/s FC technology for maximum
performance and investment protection. The industry shift from 2Gb/s to 4Gb/s
is prompting NetApp to move its storage back- end from 2Gb/s to 4Gb/s. The
DS14mk4 and ESH4 are required infrastructure to achieve a 4Gb/s storage back-end. The
DS14mk4 provides three key feature benefits: 4 4Gb/s
capable performance**
Up to 2x the maximum FC bandwidth of the
DS14mk2 and ESH2
Higher bandwidth for heavy sequential
workloads
Fewer HBAs/slots required to achieve
bandwidth needs 4 Investment
protection
Future-proof industry shift to 4Gb/s
hardware**
Eventually replaces DS14mk2 enclosure and
ESH2 4 Backward
compatible
2Gb/s operation supported back to Data
ONTAP 6.4.4
Ability to add to existing DS14 and
DS14mk2 FC loops ** 4Gb/s support on DS14mk4
requires Data ONTAP 7.2.1 and the new 4Gb/s 15k drives. May 2007 Update: 4Gb/s
15k RPM disk drives are now available, providing the final 4Gb/s component
required for a 4Gb/s storage back-end.
For systems with 4Gb/s FC SAN front-ends, the new 4Gb/s back-end
enables end-to-end 4Gb/s FC for maximum performance and investment
protection.

For full details, refer to the SE
Presentation and Engineering TOI What else does the customer need to run DS14mk4? The following
components are required to run the DS14mk4 at 2Gb/s speeds: 4 FC disk
HBAs (minimum 2Gb/s HBAs onboard or via PCIx/PCIe slot) 4 DS14mk4/ESH4
speed switch set to 2Gb 4 Appropriate
inter-shelf cables and minimum 2Gb/s optical SFP 4 Minimum
2Gb/s disk drives (10k RPM or 15k RPM) 4 Data
ONTAP 6.4.4 or later (some drives may require higher minimum Data ONTAP) With the new 15k 4Gb/s FC drives available in the
May 2007 eConfigurator, customers will be able to deploy a 4Gb/s storage back
end, which requires the following: 4 FC
Disk HBAs (minimum 4Gb/s onboard or via PCIx/PCIe slot) 4 DS14mk4/ESH4
speed switch set to 4Gb 4 Appropriate
inter-shelf cables and minimum 4Gb/s
optical SFP 4 Minimum

ONTAP 7.2.1 or later The following table lists the DS14mk4 part
numbers that are relevant for new system configurations as of the date of
this product bulletin. Partners should contact their channel
representative for pricing information.
Add-On Storage Customers can purchase DS14mk4 to expand their
existing systems. The following table lists the DS14mk4 part numbers that are
relevant for storage expansion as of the date of this product bulletin. Partners should contact their channel
representative for pricing information.
Note: All local cables (storage controller-to-shelf and
inter-shelf) for DS14mk4/ESH4 are the same as those currently used in the
DS14mk2/ESH2. For a list of these cabling options, refer to the SE
Presentation and Engineering TOI. Quoting For
detailed instructions on how to quote this product or service using the Product Availability DS14mk4
and ESH4 will be available to quote for the following systems in the February
2007 release of the FAS2XX
Series Expansion FAS3XXX
Series FAS6XXX
Series New 4Gb/s 15,000 RPM
FC drives are now available in the May 2007 eConfigurator. These are the only drives that are capable
of providing a 4Gb/s back-end. Also, fully loaded DS14mk4 shelves with 10,000
RPM FC drives are now available for sale. Products need to be validated against the NetApp Regulatory
Compliance Country List prior to order submission. The list is available at PartnerCenter
Compliance Information. This is required to ensure that products are
being sold only in the countries in which NetApp has received regulatory
compliance certification. For further information on this requirement, please see the Regulatory
Compliance Verification Product Bulletin. DS14mk4 series shelves are fully supported
through NetApp SupportEdge and Consulting Edge
services. Please check NetApp Global Services for
details on how the NetApp Global Services team can help. Contact Information: Please contact your Network
Appliance sales or channel partner representative with questions concerning
